ESTRE Pedreira Landfill Gás Project (EPLGP)
The CDM project activity “ESTRE Pedreira Landfill Gás Project (EPLGP)” encompasses the implementation and operation of a landfill gas (LFG) collection and flaring initiative at the CDR Pedreira landfill which is a landfill site located in São Paulo, Brazil. The project activity promotes permanent and real reduction of emissions of methane (CH4) through efficient and controlled combustion of LFG rich in CH4 in high temperature enclosed flares. LFG is rich in methane (CH4), a powerful GHG emission source. The project’s LFG collection and destruction system was started its operations on 5 November 2007. LFG is generated at the CDR Pedreira landfill as a result of anaerobic decomposition of municipal solid waste (MSW) historically disposed at the landfill. The project activity encompasses the following components/infrastructure: (i) Capturing of LFG through a set of vertical LFG collecting wells that are interconnected through a LFG collection pipeline network. (ii) Destruction of all collected LFG (which is collected by the LFG collecting wells and transported through the LFG collection pipeline network) by combustion in 6 high temperature enclosed flares. Besides of its flaring system, the project’s infrastructure thus also comprises LFG collection wells which are in place along the landfill and are connected to a LFG pipeline where collected LFG is sent to the flares through the use of centrifugal blowers. As indicated in the registered version of the PDD valid for the 2nd 7-year renewable crediting period of the project activity (hereafter denominated as PDD), the project design does not encompass any utilization of LFG. The project activity was thus implemented and has been operated without having any share of collected LFG being utilized as gaseous fuel for electricity generation, as gaseous fuel for boilers or for any purpose other than being destroyed through combustion in the set of 6 installed high temperature enclosed flares. By the end of the considered monitoring period encompassing the period from 03/03/2020 to 31/12/2020, the implemented project’s LFG collection system encompassed about 447 vertical LFG collection wells of which 212 were under regular and continuous operation. No horizontal LFG collection trenches have so far been utilized as part of the project activity for collecting LFG at the CDR Pedreira landfill. The amount and quality of collected LFG which is sent to the set of flares have been continuously measured, recorded and reported along the considered monitoring period. During the considered monitoring period, monitoring activities encompassed continuous measurements of LFG flow sent to each one of the flares, CH4 content of collected LFG sent to the flares, LFG temperature and LFG pressure. As also established in the project’s monitoring procedure valid for the 2nd 7-year crediting period, the status/conditions of the high temperature enclosed flares and their compliance with operational requirements (as established by the flare equipment manufacturer) are also monitored in an individual basis. During the considered monitoring period monitored, the project’s system operated most of the time in accordance with the manufacturer specifications. Whenever the system did not operate within the manufacturer´s specifications, no methane destruction was accounted for the determination of achieved emission reductions.
