TAPERA AMAZONAS REDD+

The Tapera Amazonas REDD+ Project in Urucará and Nhamundá, Amazonas, Brazil, combats severe deforestation. Amazonas experienced considerable forest loss, with 4,913 km² deforested in 2021 and 2,741 km² in 2022, leading to high CO2 emissions. Main causes include illegal logging, cattle ranching, and agriculture expansion. Urucará and Nhamundá, however, maintain high forest coverage, emphasizing their ecological importance. The project focuses on conservation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable practices. Deforestation drivers in these areas are illegal logging and agricultural expansion, with Urucará particularly affected due to timber industries in nearby São Sebastião. The project, under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) for Forestry, aims to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation. It plans to improve monitoring, employ new staff for farm management, and use carbon credits for environmental and social enhancements. In line with Brazil's Forest Code, the project supports maintaining 80% of forest cover in the Legal Amazon. Community benefits include water systems, solar panels, satellite internet, and training for sustainable forest product processing. A processing factory in Urucará will offer alternative income sources. Operations are expected to start in January 2025. The project is significant for biodiversity, located within a Key Biodiversity Area, home to unique and endangered species. It prioritizes ecosystem functions like nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration. Monitoring will involve satellite imagery, drone-based techniques, and fire prevention strategies, focusing on conserving forest areas against legal deforestation pressures.
